Students will create square designs using area and perimeter knowledge.


Each student needs:

  • 1 inch square, a 2 in square, a 3 inch square, a 4 inch square and a 5 inch square on colored construction paper.
  • 1.5 inch square, a 2.5 inch square, a 3.5 inch square, and a 4.5 inch square on construction paper of a contrasting color.
  • Glue stick
  • Ruler

Visual Arts Strand: CREATE (4.V.CR.):

Students will generate artistic work by conceptualizing, organizing, and completing their artistic ideas. They will refine original work through persistence, reflection, and evaluation.

Standard 4.V.CR.1:

Brainstorm multiple approaches to a creative art or design problem.

Math Strand: MEASUREMENT AND DATA Standard 4.MD.3:

Apply the area and perimeter formulas for rectangles in real-world and mathematical problems. For example, find the width of a rectangular room given the area of the flooring and the length, by viewing the area formula as a multiplication equation with an unknown factor

Teaching and Timeline


Classroom teacher will review how to find the area and perimeter of a square figure.
