What is BTS Arts?

The Beverley Taylor Sorenson Arts Learning Program (BTS Arts) provides Utah elementary students with arts-integrated instruction that strengthens academics while nurturing creativity, confidence, and lifelong skills.

BTS Arts is primarily funded by the Utah Legislature through a dedicated line item in the state budget with additional support from participating school districts and Sorenson organizations.

The Heart of Our Program: The Beverley Taylor Sorenson Story

Beverley Taylor Sorenson believed every child deserves the chance to learn, grow, and thrive through the arts. She saw firsthand the lack of resources for teacher training and the limited funding for arts in schools and set out to change it. A lifelong lover of the dance, music and the arts, Beverley raised eight children while championing arts education for young learners. Her vision and dedication led to the creation of seven Sorenson family endowments at Utah’s universities, ensuring teachers are equipped to deliver high-quality arts experiences statewide. Today, her legacy lives on through the Beverley Taylor Sorenson Arts Learning Program (BTS Arts), which continues her pioneering work to revitalize elementary arts education across Utah.

About the Program

The Beverley Taylor Sorenson Arts Learning Program (BTS Arts) brings high-quality, arts-integrated instruction into elementary classrooms across Utah, helping students excel in every subject, from language arts and social studies to math and science. By weaving the arts into core curriculum, students gain deeper understanding, critical thinking skills, and a love of learning.

BTS Arts places arts educators in dance, drama, music or visual art directly into schools, where they collaborate with classroom teachers to design lessons that connect creativity with essential academic concepts. The program is administered statewide by the Utah State Board of Education (USBE) in partnership with seven of Utah’s higher education institutions (Brigham Young University, Southern Utah University, University of Utah, Utah State University, Utah Tech University, Weber State University and Westminster University.) These universities provide professional development for arts educators and classroom teachers, ensuring every classroom benefits from thoughtful, high-quality implementation.

Thanks to Beverley Taylor Sorenson’s vision, hundreds of thousands of Utah elementary students experience arts-rich learning that sparks creativity, builds confidence, and strengthens understanding across all subjects, a legacy that continues to grow every day.
